Misinformation, disinformation and malinformation are relativistic neologisms about statements. They are defined according to the intentions of the person saying them. A same statement is labeled disinformation (or malinformation) if the person saying it has a conscious intent to "mislead", and misinformation if the person saying it did not have such an intention.
Whether the statement is a factual truth, half-truth or a lie is irrelevant to the use of these words. Thus, these words align very nicely with the concept of bullshit, which can be described as what a person with little to no regard or concern for the very concept of objective facts, reality or truth will say in order to push an agenda.
Of course, uttering bullshit is incompatible with the following of Him who is the way, the truth and the life.
The words misinformation, disinformation and malinformation are commonly and coherently integrated in bullshit statements, to qualify opposing arguments that hinder the agenda that is being pushed, since their use and definition also does not require any consideration for the concepts of fact, truth or reality. Indeed, the very nature of the words misinformation, disinformation and malinformation is… bullshit.
As Catholics, believers of the one true faith and the one true God, we need to constantly discern and seek the truth, the way and the life.
We shun relativism. We have no use for glib neologisms that distract us away from objective truth.
I hope Solzhenitsyn can forgive me this adaptation of his love letter to truth.
“And therein we find, neglected by us, the simplest, the most accessible key to our liberation: a personal nonparticipation in lies [and bullshit]! Even if all is covered by lies [and bullshit], even if all is under their rule, let us resist in the smallest way: Let their rule hold, but not through me!
And this is the way to break out of the imaginary encirclement of our inertness, the easiest way for us and the most devastating for lies [and bullshit]. For when people renounce lies [and bullshit], lies [and bullshit] simply cease to exist. Like parasites, lies [and bullshit] can only survive when attached to a person.
We are not called upon to step out onto the square and shout out the truth, to say out loud what we think—this is scary, we are not ready. But let us at least refuse to say what we do not think!
This is the way, then, the easiest and most accessible for us given our deep-seated organic cowardice, much easier than (it’s scary even to utter the words) civil disobedience à la Gandhi.
Our way must be: Never knowingly support lies [and bullshit]! Having understood where lies [and bullshit] begin (and many see this line differently)—step back from that gangrenous edge! Let us not glue back the flaking scales of the Ideology, not gather back its crumbling bones, nor patch together its decomposing garb, and we will be amazed how swiftly and helplessly the lies [and bullshit] will fall away, and that which is destined to be naked will be exposed as such to the world.”
May God have mercy on us all.
